In the end of 2008, prices for electricity and cooking gas were strongly increased. Several action groups formed a platform to protest against the rising costs. The demonstrators did not march through the city centre but through the residential areas to reach people where they live. Following a first demo through the 16th
urban district in January, the route led from Hannovermarkt in the 20th urban district to Gaussplatz.
