The Austrian Freedom Party FPÖ has agreed to the ratification of the EU reform treaty when it was still a coalition partner – and has meanwhile forgot about it. Part of the parliamentarians has never read the text of the treaty, but nevertheless endorses it. This is how Austria is being ruled – it seems that not having known about anything is still part of the Austrian mentality...?
Do we need this treaty – or a new policy?
The EU reform treaty comprises a duty to rearmament, participation in a European Armaments Agency, a military suppot obligation, self-empowerment to military interventions even without a UN Security Council mandate, building-up of a military core Europe and priviledges for the atomic industry. All of that is in stark contrast to the Austrian neutrality. The principle of an open market economy with untamed competition, leading to pressure to privatise public services, and the European Central Bank as a space beyond democratic control.
