In 2006, the catholic church took a surprising and disputed step concerning AIDS. Contrary to the outrageous statement of former pope John Paul II that rubbers are porous and do not impede the transmission of AIDS. Pope Benedict XVI let Javier Lozano Baragān, cardinal of the Roman curia, proclaim that married AIDS patients may use condoms as a lesser evel. A correspondent document was being elaborated. His proclamation may come as a surprise but must not be taken as a change of policy. As a matter of fact, condoms are still frowned upon and strictly refused by the catholic church.
